My open mic appearances are in reverse chronological order (latest first) on this page. You can use the links below for the venues at which I’ve appeared.
The Harp Inn (Costa Mesa, CA)
Karman Bar (Laguna Niguel, CA)
Tin Dog Tavern (Nashville, TN)
Father’s Pub (Santa Ana, CA)
T & L Pollos (Whittier, CA)
Mark Shelton wasn’t available for guitar accompaniment, so I found a talented performer, Diana Meyer, to help me out.
This set is Stationary Bike, USC (Traveler, UCLA Sucks), Houston (Fake Shark), Tech Support to the People of India, Tainted Lunch.
Showed up at Umami Burger at 6:30pm for 8:45pm signups. I was the 5th comic on scene. When host Friendly Frank arrived with the signup sheet, nobody wanted to go first, so I was all over that.
This is a quick set: Strip Club Shrimp and Tainted Lunch.
I performed at The Harp Inn Open Mic on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. Big thanks to mic host Dave Hatch for getting me on early and saving my set with a funny tag at the end!
As Vice President Dan Quayle once said to the NAACP, “It’s a terrible thing when you lose your mind.”
I performed at Karman Bar in Laguna Niguel on August 20, 2017. This was a really fun set that included Google Engineer, Civil War Reenactors vs. Darth Vader, Traveler, Nana’s and Bampa’s 95th birthday, and a song, Tainted Lunch (11:00).
My 2nd try with Relationship Goal: Acknowledgement / Certificates. I like the quirk flow of this bit, but still have some work to do on it.
My first try at relationship goal / printed certificate. Followed by the Gaslighting Bit (Atheists and Vegetarians, Trump Supporters and Noncombatants, Bathroom Essentials, and Passenger Seat). There is a lot for me to work on with these. I think both can become bits by which people know me with some work and practice.
Bonus clip (not streamed on Periscope) of me singing what will now be known as The Ballad of Bosco’s Bed with Mark Shelton on keyboard.
On this night, I discovered the Venti Cappuccino plus 2 extra shots. Also, I was on 6th. Energy was great. The comics in the audience were terrific. New premise, mostly new material. I worked on this set all weekend. This might be my best set to date.
2nd to last at The Harp Inn tonight, 11:30ish! It’s the only way to do that mic. I wrote this bit at 6pm. Synthetic Meat and Sex Robots. I missed two punchlines, and depended on my note cards a little more than I like. But I think this has some promise.
3 out of 4 of these bits are absolutely true. Performing for 80 year old stoners, Buying dog food, Electricity shaming, Amber Alerts.
Mark Zukerberg has a plan! Facebook groups.
Returned to the Karman Bar for 10 minutes (rounded down) of completely new material: Plane Crash, Observant Friend, Facebook.
I had the privilege of having my friend Pravin and his daughter Rishica in the audience for a quick, mostly clean “Tech Support to the People of India”. My first appearance at Friendly Frank’s Umami Burger mic.
25 minutes! Karman Bar, June 11, 2017.
- Phil Mickelson, bad for golf.
- Tiger Woods, Time Traveler.
- Derek Fisher, Unexpected Gangster.
- Tech Support to the People of India.
- Corporate Buzzwords / Bandwidth
Stayed late, got on. Tiger Woods, Time Traveler.
My first LA County open mic! I went up to Whittier, to a little show at T & L Pollos. This is my first try at Tiger Woods, Time Traveler. I reworked Tech Support to the People of India with an anti-drug commercial reference nobody got. And for Nick in Rochester, I stretch Devon Arthurs into an aside about paleo-Nazis.
My best effort yet at Tech Support to the People of India / Corporate Buzzwords. I still have some things I want to improve, but am happy with how this went.
Kyle, one of the regulars at The Harp Inn, told me about the show at Father’s Pub in Santa Ana on Sunday nights. Since Karman Bar had another event this night, I tried the mic at Father’s Pub.
This set is Tech Support to the People of India + Corporate Buzzwords. And yes, I know Used to Love Her is from GnR Lies, not Spaghetti Incident.
I performed at the comedy open mic at The Harp Inn on May 16, 2017. I got there very early and was 8th in line for the open mic. Because a few comics cancelled, I ended up 4th of 5 open mic comics. When I went on, the audience consisted on Joey (who ran the open mic), the bartender, and the next comic. So this performance was for the cameras.
The set was Tech Support to the People of India, Nitin (who hand-crafts sweaters and sells on Etsy), corporate buzzwords, and the best Axl Rose Chinese Democracy impression ever done on stage.
I was planning to stay home this week, rest up, put together a great original 15 minute set for next week. But Mark Shelton emailed me and asked me to come out. So late in the afternoon, I took some bits I know well, and tried to put together 15 minutes. I’m happy with how it turned out, even though I flubbed two jokes in Tech Support to the People of India.
